Nope, this is totally true. Until right around that time, male and female toddlers would usually dress identically. Also, blue was considered a feminine color, and pink masculine.
Another fun gender fact: The words “girl” and “boy” weren’t used very commonly until the early 19th century to denote gender. Until the mid-1700s, “girl” just meant a child. IIRC, male children were called “hay girls” and female children were called (lol) “gay girls”. Boy was a pejorative, dominating word used to address stablehands or servants, who were usually male.
